about
My research explores the cultural and social aspects of sound, with a particular focus on how listening practices shape identity, memory, and belonging across ritual, media, and digital environments. Working at the intersection of sound studies, ethnomusicology, and media anthropology, I combine ethnographic research with creative practice to investigate sound as both lived experience and analytical framework.
My research is particularly concerned with:
Ritual sound and embodiment in Sri Lankan low-country drumming
Sound, migration, and diasporic identity
Auditory memory and digital media
Listening as a form of civic and social engagement
My current and forthcoming book projects include:
Digital Media, Soundscapes, and Civic Engagement in a Globalised World (Routledge, October 2026)
Embodied Resonance: Ritual, Caste, and Sonic Transformation in Sri Lankan Low-Country Drumming (in development)
More broadly, my research contributes to ongoing discussions of sound as both a cultural practice and a mode of knowledge production. Alongside my academic work, I maintain an active creative practice in composition and sound design, with contributions to television, film, and documentary projects. This practice-based engagement informs and extends my ethnographic and theoretical approach to sound.
"Memories That Make Us" is a poignant ethnographic documentary that delves into the personal and shared memories of Italian migrants who settled in Victoria, Australia, following the conclusion of the Second World War. Martin Potter, as the writer and director, infuses the narrative with depth and sensitivity, while the soundscapes crafted by Tharupathi Munasinghe enrich the film's immersive quality, bringing the migrants' stories to life with great emotional resonance. "Amawaka (The Invisible Moon)" is an upcoming Sri Lankan Sinhala movie directed by Vijitha Gunaratne and produced by Upul Jayasinghe under Nilwala Films.
